I bargained with life for a penny,
And life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
For life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to find, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of life,
Life would have willingly paid.
~ Jessie B. Rittenhouse
I came across this poem when I first read Napoleon Hill’s great book, ‘Think and Grow Rich’. It inspired me, then, because it made me realise that each of us has the power to set our own value in life.
It’s a choice we make!
Whilst Jessie B. has written with a sense of finality – a sense that this truth was discovered all too late. The reality is, we can choose to increase our value whenever we want to.
Doesn’t ‘now’ sound like the perfect time?
And remember, whilst the poem illustrates value in a monetary sense, there are so many other ways in which we can bring value ….. and the best part is, we get to choose how much.
Remember: If you’re going to think, you might as well Think BiG!
Have a great day,
